Chapter 8 - Darcy

I stand by the window of my chambers, my thoughts consumed by Eliza. Our walk in the gardens earlier today has left an indelible mark on my heart, her wit and charm captivating me in a way I never thought possible.

I find myself smiling as I recall her clever observations about the estate’s architecture, her eyes alight with curiosity as she asked about the history of the hall. Her thirst for knowledge, combined with her modesty and gentle nature, has stirred something within me that I can no longer ignore.

As I make my way to the drawing room, my steps are filled with purpose. The grand space, with its ornate furnishings and priceless artworks reminiscent of the drawing room at Pemberley, is a symbol of the world I inhabit. Yet tonight, this space feels almost cozy. The crackling fire and warm candlelight create an atmosphere of intimacy, as if the room itself is conspiring to bring Eliza and me closer together.

I sink into a plush armchair, allowing myself a moment of quiet contemplation. In my mind’s eye, I see Eliza back at my estate, her presence transforming the austere rooms into a home. I imagine her curled up with a book by the fire, looking up to share a particularly amusing passage with me. The vision is so vivid, so enticing, that I can almost hear her laughter echoing off the high ceilings.

A soft knock at the door interrupts my reverie. “Enter,” I call, straightening in my seat. To my surprise, it is Mrs. Gardiner who steps into the room, her face bearing an expression I cannot quite decipher.

“Mr. Darcy,” Mrs. Gardiner’s voice pulls me from my reverie as she steps into the drawing room and greets me with a curtsy. “Perhaps I am not the only one finding sleep elusive tonight. I hope I am not intruding on your evening.”

“Not at all, Mrs. Gardiner,” I reply, rising to my feet. “Please, join me. I was just reminiscing about the day’s events.”

“I doubt it is a coincidence that I was also thinking about the day’s events.” Mrs. Gardiner settles herself in the chair opposite mine, her hands folded neatly in her lap. “Forgive me, Mr. Darcy, but I wish to speak with you about a matter of some... delicacy,” she begins, her voice careful.

My curiosity piqued, I lean forward slightly. “I am all attention, madam. How may I be of assistance?”

She takes a deep breath before continuing. “It concerns my traveling companion, Eliza. I could not help but notice your... particular attentions to her during our stay here.”

I feel a flush creeping up my neck, but I meet Mrs. Gardiner’s gaze steadily. “You are most perceptive, madam. I hold Miss Eliza in the highest esteem.”

Mrs. Gardiner’s eyes widen slightly at my frank admission. “I see,” she murmurs. “And may I inquire as to the nature of your interest in her?”

For a moment, I consider deflecting, but the earnestness in Mrs. Gardiner’s expression compels me to honesty. “My interest in Miss Eliza is entirely honorable, I assure you.
